New Honda Civic at Geneva Motor Show

The all-new Honda Civic will be previewed at next month’s Geneva Motor Show when the car is due in 2017

What is it?

Next month the Geneva Motor Show is about to start and there Honda will preview the exterior design of its next-generation Civic prototype. The new Honda Civic is due for launch early next year and the teaser sketch points out the styling of it. The Civic saloon already on sale in the US shows the design clues of the new car. The prototype boosts the same tail-lamp design as the current car but the revised roofline and twin exhausts makes the car sportier. This new car will be powered by petrol and diesel engine.

What are the engine options offered?

A 1.5-litre petrol turbo engine is expected to be the mainstream engine for this new car. The models launched in the US are offered in 173bhp output but for the European market it is expected to be sold in lower-power. There will also be a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine for the new 2017 Civic which will be offered in 127bhp and 148lb ft. of torque. It is expected to replace Honda’s normally aspirated 1.8-litre petrol engine. Honda sources in Japan tell that the 1.0 turbo engine will be rated at 99g/km CO2. As far as the diesel unit is, Honda Civic will be getting the 1.6-litre diesel engine too.

Where the new car will be built?

According to sources, this new five-door Civic is going to be built at Swindon plant which, since 2009, has been running below its capacity of 250,000 per year. Honda has confirmed that they have invested £200 million at the plant to allow for the production of new Civic when the plant has made just 119,000 Civic and CR-Vs last year. Honda will be shifting the CR-V production to Canada soon, leaving Swindon plant as the global source for the Civic hatchback. Since Honda is working on the new policy of building global models so it has not been confirmed that whether Europe will get an estate version of Civic ever again or not but it seems relatively unlikely.
